(3) Carreg Cennen Castle

Distance from Craig-y-Nos Castle 31 miles

Carreg Cennen Castle enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in Wales. It sits atop a rugged 300 ft cliff which would have made it impregnable from the East.

Remains suggest the site was occupied in Prehistoric and Roman times but the first castle was probably built around the time of the fabled King Arthur.

The present building goes back to the reign of Edward the First who seized the original castle in 1277 and gave it to John Giffard.

He rebuilt it with a passageway leading to an underground cave deep in the limestone. This can still be explored by torchlight.
